Kansas City Accident Victim- What are the Symptoms of a Serious Neck Injury?
A neck injury can be just that– a real pain in the neck. You get the idea. If you’ve ever been in a car crash, you know that even the slightest injuries can stay with you long after the accident. One of the most common neck injuries you can receive in a car accident is whiplash. This is typically caused in a rear-end collision and causes the neck to jolt back and forth against the motion force of your body. Whiplash usually causes sometimes long term damage to the tissue in your neck.

Whiplash is the most common neck injury a motorist or passenger can receive in a Kansas City car accident.
Check out these Symptoms of a Neck Injury:
- Pain in the back of the neck
- Stiffness and decreased range of neck motion

Have You Suffered a Head Injury in Kansas or Missouri?; New Online Software Screens for Traumatic Brain Injury
Don’t you wish there was a way to diagnose if you have a head injury without the initial trip to the doctor? If you’re suffering from a possible head injury you may be in luck. Thanks to a research team at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, a new web based screening tool has been developed and is now available to the general public.
Dr. Wayne Gordon began developing this tool over 20 years ago. While working with school children, he realized a great number of them were suffering from TBI and either weren’t being treated or hadn’t even been diagnosed to begin with. Many of the children had suffered the head injuries because of abuse or assault. As a result, the injuries weren’t being reported. So, Dr. Gordon decided he wanted to develop an anonymous test to help victims.
The Brain Injury Screening Questionnaire (BISQ) is a web based tool that allows possible victims to anonymously answer questions about the severity of their head injury to determine if they need further ongoing treatment. Questions range from how the injury happened, the mental state of the victim (are they dazed, confused, disoriented, etc.), sleep patterns, memory selection, ability to carry out daily routines and organization. At the end of the test, the victim is given a score and if they are considered at risk, they are advised to see a doctor or neurologist for further treatment.
The software is very inexpensive, only $15 for the software and can be purchased through the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Do Women Recover From Brain Injuries Faster Than Men? Hormonal Research Could Affect TBI Victims in Kansas and Missouri
For years, doctors have worked to find a way to help patients not only recover from serious brain injuries but to continue to get better. The sad fact is that while recovery is possible in many cases, actually seeing actual “healing” in the patient’s brain has been near impossible. That may be about to change.
Research being conducted at Emory University is showing that a treatment using the female hormone progesterone could in fact show recovery in the brain over time. Professor Donald Stein began his research working on the brains of lab rats. His tests showed what many of his colleagues thought was impossible: substantial recovery in brain activity.
What is Progesterone? Progesterone is a hormone found in both female and male brains. It is best known for being a supporting hormone during a pregnancy but increased studies are showing that this hormone could be a huge key in human brain development.
Emory University is now conducting further research thanks to support from the National Institutes of Health. Across the country, 17 medical centers in 15 states are conducting studies using progesterone.
As experienced Kansas City Brain Injury Attorneys, we are proud as always of the ongoing research being conducted worldwide. The effects of brain injuries cause different reactions within the brain from patient to patient. It is important for doctors and neurologists alike to use each others research to fuel their own. Try and try again. If they’re going to find the key ingredient in helping an injured brain recover it is going to be by doing what Professor Stein did in this case, continue his work even when everyone else is against you.

Drill Bit Accident at Rhode Island Hospital Raises Questions about Accuracy of Past Brain Surgeries
Surviving a severe head injury can be a difficult time for anyone. However what is more concerning is follow up treatments and possible surgeries and procedures that may be necessary following the injury to prevent further brain damage. As stressful as this can be for TBI patients, it can be even scarier when you’re not sure if you can trust your neurosurgeon.
Take the case of a recent incident at Rhode Island Hospital. An investigation by the State Health Department is underway after a neurosurgeon accidentally left a 1/4″ drill bit in a patients skull during a surgical procedure on August 4, 2010. The hospital removed the drill bit piece two days later and has since suspended the surgeon and surgical staff involved in the incident.
In 2007, the same hospital was investigated for allegations that neurosurgeons operated on the wrong part of the brain in three different brain injury surgery cases. The hospital was fined over $50,000 for the incidents at the time.

Can Traumatic Brain Injuries be Diagnosed through Blood Tests? Research Could Benefit Kansas City TBI Victims
Catastrophic head injuries are serious business, that’s no secret. The problem is detecting the severity of a head injury has been difficult as often times the symptoms of a serious head injury may not develop immediately. However, that may be changing.
A project run by the U.S. Army may have determined that serious head injuries can be detected with blood tests by identifying bio markers in the blood that can be traced to traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The project, which is being run by Col. Dallas Hack, could show that by looking for certain proteins in the bloodstream, head injuries can be detected more easily than by imaging scans. Hack’s team has correctly identified traumatic brain injuries in 34 patients so far.
Neuroscientists are unsure if these tests will work in clinical situations. While the medical community isn’t ready to completely endorse findings, Col. Hack feels it could be a breakthrough for head injuries on par with developments in the 1970′s that advanced they way heart disease was detected and treated.
As Kansas City Brain Injury Attorneys at Roswold Law Group, we know that no head injury should ever be taken lightly. We encourage you to seek treatment for all head injuries, no matter how minor they appear. Even the slightest head bump can lead to long term brain damage that can weaken the brain and make it vulnerable to serious brain illness and disease.

If You Have Suffered a TBI in Kansas City, You May Be at Risk of Lou Gehrig’s Disease
There is a lot of information available today about the long term affects of head injuries and how they relate to the development of serious brain illnesses such as ALS, now also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Gehrig, one of the greatest baseball players in the history of the game, passed away at the age of 36 because of the rapid deterioration of his brain caused by ALS. At the time there was not much to suggest his illness was in anyway linked to heard injuries.
Have You Suffered a Head Injury as a Kansas City Athlete? Wii Fit May Help in Your Recovery
Gehrig, known as the Iron Horse because he played day in and day out, suffered at least six known concussions during his playing career and this was a time of the game when players did not wear protective batting helmets. Gehrig who at one time held the record for consecutive games played, never had the proper rest and recovery that he need to sufficiently recover from his head injury and it is believed that his development of ALS is the fatal result.
Sixty years later, a lot has changed and that has to do with the determination of neurologist who have worked hard to discover the cause of these tragic brain diseases. One of them is Dr. Ann McKee, a neurology professor at the Boston University, who has been conducting research in an attempt to connect head trauma and traumatic brain injury to serious brain illnesses such as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Our Kansas and Missouri Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Lawyers, we know that no head injury should be ignored, no matter how slight the injury may appear to be at first. We hope that all Kansas City athletes use this discovery as the final excuse to wear proper head protection when playing sports such as football and baseball.

‘The Brain Guy’ on a Bike Ride to Raise Awareness of TBI Recovery; Survivor Provides Hope for Kansas City Victims of Head Injury
Meet Jerry Christensen. Jerry hails from Rock Creek, Wyoming. Jerry is currently embarking on a cross country bike tour. What you don’t know about Jerry is that he is the improbable survivor of a traumatic brain injury he suffered in a bicycle accident when he was 15.
Jerry’s recovery is only improbable because doctors once told him he would never recover and be able to lead a full life and do things a “normal” person would do, like go to college and hold a steady job. But the road to recovery was not easy. After his injury, Jerry was in a coma for a week and he was paralyzed for longer. He died twice. According to Jerry himself, his heart stopped twice although he was never technically declared dead. But doctors gave him no hope for ever having a normal life.
Through sheer will and determination, Jerry has done just that and now is on a mission to raise awareness of his accomplishments and help to further research into TBI recovery methods. He stopped in Kearney, Nebraska last week to speak out for the Brain Shift Foundation, who is benefiting from his bike tour, called the Recovery is NOW Tour. The bike tour is already being called the longest bike tour to ever benefit a non-profit organization. He’s trying to get the Guiness Book to pay attention and possibly get credited for the longest solo bike tour.
All of this after medical professionals and doctors said none of it would ever happen.
As Kansas City Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Lawyers, we encourage everyone to take even the slightest head injury seriously. Even the most seeming insignificant bump can lead to long term damage down the road. We applaud Mr. Christensen for his courage and ability to triumph in the face of adversity. We hope Kansas City victims of traumatic brain injury are able to view Jerry as a role model in their own recovery.
